AT&T High-Seas Service Radio Transmission Station, Pennsuco (WOM) | radio - do not use, telecommunication, transmission tower (electric / electricity)

USA / Florida / Hialeah Gardens /
radio - do not use, telecommunication, transmission tower (electric / electricity)

One of three AT&T-operated public coast radio stations that offered High Seas Service (high frequency radio-telephone service) to ships in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Gulf of Mexico. Operations ended in 1999.

Pennsuco had originally been merely a TD-2 repeater, the most southerly on the route down the Everglades along US 27. When it was time to clear the HF transmitters out of Ojus (TRT shut down its HF operations), ATT built a whole new remote controlled HF plant (a bit smaller since HF operations were shrinking) at Pennsuco.
This is the transmitter site of WOM. The receiver site was located at Ft. Lauderdale, FL.

  • Thanks for figuring what exactly what this place is, Desu! The chain-link fence is quite high (forget exploring), the place looks abandoned (now I know why), and it is miles from anything populated.
  • I saw on Street View / Google Maps and at least in that pic it appears that the gate is open.
  • I drove by a week ago (last Tuesday) and saw an FPL truck leaving the site. Wonder if it's still active..
