St. Sophia Cathedral (Vologda)

The oldest building in Vologda. The temple was built on the orders of Tsar Ivan the Terrible in the 1568-1570 year. Original title Assumption Cathedral. Straw on similar to the Assumption Cathedral in Moscow, allegedly the architect Rozmyslom Petrov.
According to legend, in in 1571, when the temple took Ivan the Terrible, his head fell on a piece of plaster and angry king went to Moscow, never making Vologdu capital of Russia.
Construction of the temple was finished after the death of the king, in in 1588.
The cathedral was schedule in 1686 in Yaroslavl master Dmitri Plehanovym. In the temple is the largest in Russia fresco "Last Judgement".
