Built as a deer-coursing grandstand c. 1634 for John Dutton "Crump" on his estate Sherborne House. Deer-coursing was a popular sport of chasing stags with dogs. Sherborne estate played a key role in popularizing fox hunting as a replacement to the crueler sport of deer coursing.
