(SMC) was founded on the 18th of May 1957, to exploit the manganese deposits in Sinai Peninsula, Egypt. The company succeeded to replace the British Sinai Mining Company which ceased it’s operations in June 1960 the mandate of SMC was expanded to include exploration of other economic mineral sources such as Kaolin, Gypsum, Bentonite, Sand and Manganese ore.

The company began the exploitation of sand deposits from Gabal El Khashab near Maadi District Cairo. Starting 1990 the production of calcined gypsum (Plaster of Paris) started in the industrial plant built in Ras Malaab with a capacity of 300000 tons/years. In 1993 the production of high carbon Ferro Manganese started in the plant built in Abu Zenima area with a capacity of 40000 tons / year.
