Around 1921, Durant Motors built a factory here to produce the "Flint" model. Beginning in 1935, GM's Fisher Body division operated the factory. Much of it was demolished in 1988, and the remainder was renovated and expanded into the Great Lakes Technology Center. General Motors leased the center as an R&D facility until 2009, when it closed.
