  • I went to Lansdowne Road in 1993 when Young Munster's were underdogs in the A.I.L. League final against St. Mary's.As a child I supported Bohemians as my father, Dan who was a former rugby referee, supported Bohs.I was born in 1959 and Bohs had their only Munster Senior Cup success in the 1961-62 season. For me following Bohs throughout the 60's, 70's and 80's was tough because they weren't in contention for any competitions. When I attended the A.I.L. League Final in 1993 in front of a record 20,000 attendance at Lansdowne Park, I fell in love with everything about the Young Munster Rugby Club. I watched the late Dodo Reddan in Lansdowne Road with her beloved dogs! The match was attended by stars from other sporting codes in Limerick city. I remember seeing Joe O'Mahony from Limerick soccer fame there.I remember Ger Earls scoring the break away try in the left hand corner. I remember Brent Pope flattening Francis Brosnahan and Ger Brosnahan coming on to the field. In the late 90's I witnessed Ger Earls coaching his son Keith in the finer aspects of rugby in Dalgaish Park, Moyross. Anthony Foley has openly said that his most difficult opponent ever was Ger Earls. I can safely say that if Keith Earls was asked in the morning who was the biggest influence on his career? - He would say his father Ger. It was an inspiration for me as a parent of young boys to watch Ger Earls spending so much time playing rugby with his son in Dalgaish Park. A neighbour of mine, John Ryan who played out-half with Shannon R.F.C. once told me that if you get your children involved in sport from an early age, it is half the battle with the dangers facing them from drink and drugs. It is the best advice that I as a parent have ever been given! The passion of the Young Munster's players and supporter's is second to none! Incedentally, the first ever match in Thomond Park was in 1938 between Young Munster's and Bohemian's. Young Munster's won by 8 points to nil. Of the 30 players that day on the field, my father Dan was the second last to die on the 11th sep 1999. The last player of those 30 player's on the field to die was the former Mayor of Lumerick, Ted Russell who died a few years ago. Garryowen R.F.C. and Shannon R.F.C. can never say that their teams won the prestigious Bateman Cup! Yours In Sport, Jude Meaney.
