Similar in function to the Ronald McDonald Houses, the Hope Lodge is a free/low-cost place for patients and their families to stay during extended cancer treatments at Moffit.

On June 3, 2002, the American Cancer Society, Florida Division opened its third Hope Lodge, located next to the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center on the campus of the University of South Florida. The American Cancer Society's Benjamin Mendick Hope Lodge is a short-term residential facility designed to offer housing, counseling and referral services free of charge to any cancer patient who travels to the Tampa Bay area for treatment.

The $8.8 million, 47,000 sq. ft. facility includes 40 suites with private baths, community dining areas, six kitchens, a family room, laundry rooms, a library with computer access and recreational areas. The fourth floor of the Mendick Hope Lodge is reserved for bone-marrow transplant patients who have special needs. In addition, the facility features a Day Center for outpatients and their families who need a respite from the clinical hospital environment as well as a Patient Services Center where patients can access various American Cancer Society programs and services.

Resident Profile

To stay at the Mendick Hope Lodge, residents must meet the following eligibility requirements:

* Referral by social service department of a treatment center
* Patients are ambulatory and undergoing outpatient treatment at a Tampa Bay area facility
* Patients of all ages are welcome
* Three-day minimum stay

Cancer treatment is often a long and emotional experience. Meeting the medical needs of cancer patients is only part of the cure. Addressing the human needs is also critical and that's what the American Cancer Society's Benjamin Mendick Hope Lodge is all about. Cancer patients receive support from professionals, families, friends and other patients to help build the hope needed for their personal battle against cancer.

Volunteers help make the difference, by sharing and caring with Hope Lodge residents. Whether you have a few hours once a week or once a month, you can make a difference. You can volunteer as an individual or as part of a community or civic group on an ongoing basis or as a one-time project.
