house, production, interesting place
Dalmore House was built in the 1880s for the owners of the Tam O'Shanter and Water of Ayr Hone Works near Stair, East Ayrshire. The hone stone was quarried and later mined on the estate. A graphite mine and mill also once existed here. The hone works also produced paint for warships and coatings for oil pipes in desert areas. Production finally ceased in the early 2000s. The house was left as a shell after a fire in the late 1960s.
