Originally a small lake and collection of bogs until the first dam was built across the Oswegatchie in 1865-1867. The dam was 13 x 80 feet and doubled the size of the lake. In 1916 a second dam was built out of concrete. That dam has been replaced twice.
Inlets to the lake include Brandy Brook, East Creek, Sucker Brook, Six mile Creek, Dead Creek, and the Oswegatchie.
