Lake St. Lawrence

During the construction of the Saint Lawrence Seaway, a navigable channel through the Long Sault rapids needed to be created. Dams and locks were created, forming an artificial lake named Lake St. Lawrence, which allowed hydroelectric stations to be established immediately upriver from Cornwall, Ontario and Massena, New York. The lake was formed by flooding the river on July 1, 1958. Inundation of the river caused ten villages in Ontario, now collectively known as "The Lost Villages", to be flooded. There was also inundation on the New York side, but no communities were affected.
