Thirsk (the Town of) is first mentioned in the Doomsday book as "Tresche".
Thirsk is an old fashioned market town of North Yorkshire. It is home to a renowned race course and a marvelous 15th Century Church, St Marys. Thirsk is also the Darrowby of the late James Herriot (Alf Wight), famous vet and author. Thirsk and Sowerby are both set in the centre of what has become known as "Herriot Country", the Gateway to no fewer than two National Parks; Yorkshire Dales National Park to the west and the North Yorkshire Moors National Park to the east. As befits such a typical English market town and a former mail-coach posting stage, the market place is to this day still encircled by a number of welcoming public houses most of which provide food. Other eateries include traditional Fish and Chips, French, Indian, Chinese and the dreaded modern pizza takeaways as well as other cafes and restaurants. Thirsk is roughly 228km south of Edinburgh, 315km north of London and 37km north north west of York. The population of Thirsk in 2001 was estimated at 4460, with Sowerby coming in a close second 3610 and Carlton Miniott 920.
