house, place with historical importance
This large home was called "Baywood" by its original owner, Alexander King, when it was built in 1880 to replace the former home of General James S. Negley which was lost to fire. After Alexander died his son Robert Burns King added castle-like features to the house. The estate became public property from the time of Robert's death in 1954 until the City of Pittsburgh sold it to Dr. Frank Brown in 1994. Under the ownership of the Brown family, the house has won several restoration/preservation awards as well as city historic landmark status.
