Normans Cay served as the headquarters for Carlos Lehder and George Jung’s drug-smuggling operation from 1978 to around 1982, and this Curtiss C-46 Commando was used as part of their cocaine smuggling operation. The drug trade paid for an airstrip, and several buildings and some pretty nice houses, which are now abandoned.
The story goes that it was full of drugs but ran out of fuel before it could make the airstrip. The plane now serves as a good anchorage for fishing boats.
