Lamu or Lamu Town is a small town on Lamu Island, which in turn is a part of the Lamu Archipelago in Kenya. Situated 341 kilometres (212 mi) by road northeast of Mombasa that ends at Mokowe Jetty, from where the sea channel has to be crossed to reach Lamu Island. It is the headquarters of Lamu County and a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The town contains the Lamu Fort on the seafront, constructed under Fumo Madi ibn Abi Bakr, the sultan of Pate, and was completed after his death in the early 1820s. Lamu is also home to 23 mosques, including the Riyadha Mosque, built in 1900, and a donkey sanctuary.

i think he just means that forces loyal to the Islamic Courts might be fleeing south from Somalia and the TFG and take refuge in towns such as Lamu

no, please don't think of it like that. i don't know what nation you are from, but i am an american, and i will tell you that most of us don't see all muslims as terrorists. it is only the radicals who feel this way. one cannot just generalize and say "all americans" feel a certain way -- in fact, there is little on which we all agree. please understand that the government of our country often does not always accurately reflect the views of the people. we don't think of muslims as terrorists, and please don't think of us as muslim-haters.

Jim: Obviously you are one of the good ones. However, based on dcbryan1's response, I am inclined to think that he sees the world in less nuanced ways. I tend to look at the Islamic Courts folks using the same lens as I look at fundamentalist Christians. I don't think that they are all crazy, but there are elements of extremism (e.g. George Bush) to those movements that is unhealthy to the dialouge. So whether UIC people are taking refuge in Lamu is immaterial...the tenor of Lamu does not espouse Islamic fundamentalism anymore than Main Street, USA promotes it's own brand of fundamentalism.
