Villa Maria was originally designed by George Skidmore in 1887 as a "rambling, Queen Anne-style summer house" for partners, cousins, and industrial financiers Josiah Lombard and Marshall Ayres, Jr. of the Lombard, Ayres & Company. It underwent later alterations by Frank Freeman.
It was most recently purchased by Vince Camuto.
