School attended by Shawnee, Delaware, and other Indian children from 1839-1862. The Shawnee Mission served the territorial capitol from 1855 to 1856; the pro-slavery laws passed here sparked the Bleeding Kansas violence between pro- and anti-slavery forces. It was a supply point on the Santa Fe and Oregon Trails and Union camp during the Civil War. Established by the Methodist Rev. Thomas Johnson, namesake of the county. Open to the public. 913-262-0867.
