School attended by Shawnee, Delaware, and other Indian children from 1839-1862. The Shawnee Mission served the territorial capitol from 1855 to 1856; the pro-slavery laws passed here sparked the Bleeding Kansas violence between pro- and anti-slavery forces. It was a supply point on the Santa Fe and Oregon Trails and Union camp during the Civil War. Established by the Methodist Rev. Thomas Johnson, namesake of the county.
