Here at Santul Mare was the ancient Dacian city of Ziridava, mentioned by Ptolemy. It was a large settlement, had numerous buildings and workshops, and also two sanctuaries, a circular one and a sanctuary with apsis. It existed between the III century BC - II century AD. Also, there have been found traces of habitation from other periods, like the Bronze Age and the Early Middle Ages.
