  • The Devakottai Nagara Shivan Koil is one of the temples built by Nattukkottai Nagarathars or Chettiars of Devakottai Town in a typical Chettinad Temple design with Sri Sundareswarar and Sri Meenakshi as the prinicpal deities. Following Deepavali, Skandar Sashti Viazha is celebrated for a week for Sri Bala Dhandayuthapani (Murugan) with pomp and vigour. The `VAARA VAZHIPAADU' or the weekly prayer was started at this temple in 1954 and it is still performed on every Friday without any break for such a long time. The `Vaara Vazhipaadu' was initiated by Sri AL. AR. SOMA. Narayanan Chettiar of the Devakottai Zamindar's family in 1954 and is being conducted by him even now. He started this programme simultaenoeusly in 5 temples and conducted it each day in 1 temple from Monday to Friday. He has been instrumental in inculcating good habits, religious practices, and moral studies in almost all the children of the area.
