The original Glen O' Dee Hospital on the outskirts of Banchory started its life in 1901 as Nordrach on Dee Hospital, a sanctuary for tuberculosis patients, based on a German design at Nordrach-on-Baden in Bavaria. When TB died down it served as a luxury hotel (when it became "Glen O' Dee"), but was taken over during the war to serve as a billet for troops.

It reprised its role in contagious diseases when the typhoid epidemic hit nearby Aberdeen in the 1960s, but its last use was as a residential home for the elderly. They are now served by a smaller modern hospital in the shadow of its progenitor, and the original awaits its fate. Several attempts have been made to sell it despite the hospital being gifted to the people of Banchory by the Red Cross[citation needed], and it has been featured on the BBC's Restoration programme, but the original Glen O' Dee Hospital has sat empty and deteriorating since 1995.
