Lake Burton is a 2,775 acre (11.23 km²) man made lake with 62 miles (100 km) of shoreline located in the northeastern corner of Georgia in Rabun County. It is the first lake in a five-lake series that follows the original Tallulah River. The series starts at the head waters of the Tallulah River with Lake Burton followed by Lake Seed, Lake Rabun, Terrora Lake (at Tallulah Falls), Lake Tugalo, and finally Lake Yonah. The lakes are owned and operated by the Georgia Power Company to generate hydro-electric energy for Georgia's largest city, Atlanta. At one time these lakes were the largest producers of electricity in the state of Georgia. Now, they only provide peak power supply. It has a generating capacity of 6.120 megawatts from two units. The lake was built in a deep valley located along a 10 mile section of the Tallulah River. The mighty Tallulah River intersects with the beautiful Chattooga River to form a massive class V/VI river that is now Lake Tugalo and Lake Yonah.
