Since 1938, we have served the people of the State of Mississippi and the nation by awarding degrees to motivated, industrious people of the likes of Robert L. Pigford and many others as a program in the Department of Chemistry. In 1956, the faculty awarded its first degree as a stand-alone department of chemical engineering.
Chemical engineering is a discipline with an emphasis on the chemical transformations of small and large molecules by processes and systems that are economically feasible. The chemical engineering curriculum is broadly-based having its foundations resting on a knowledge of biology, chemistry, mathematics and physics. With this preparation, the graduate of the MSU chemical engineering school is ready to practice in a number of entry-level positions in development, design, and control of processes to prepare useful products with very little impact on the environment. These industries include chemical and energy companies, producers of consumer and specialty products, pharmaceuticals, textiles, and polymers. The scope of chemical engineering also includes applications of molecular biology and polymer science to prepare novel substances from renewable resources for commercial use. The undergraduate experience at MSU is aimed at providing the graduate with the ability to realize a successful and fulfilling career lasting over a life-time.
