Presently operating as a NATO Naval Support Facility, the Santo Stefano Naval Base formerly operated under the control of the US Navy as NAVSUPACT (NAVal SUPPort ACTivity) Santo Stefano as a forward-deployed homeport for Submarine Squadron 22. Also hosting a permanent barracks for Italian Navy Personnel, the facility was the homeport of a forward-deployed Submarine Tender vessel throughout the Cold War and several years after, with all US Navy operations ceasing in 2008.
Reverting to the operational control of NATO thereafter, the base is now operated and maintained by the Italian Navy.
