Wal-Mart Supercenter - Camp

Wal-Mart Brazil opens hypermarket ecofriendly
02/12/2008
Wal-Mart opened its first hypermarket in the neighborhood of ecofriendly Camp in the northern zone of Rio de Janeiro. The store brings together the largest number of sustainable initiatives that the company has in its units: more than 60. "This store is a result of work we do since 2005, deploying and testing the changes that contribute to the environment. It is the first time a store of this size offers so many changes related to sustainability, "says the president of Wal-Mart Brazil, Hector Nunez.

Wal-Mart Camp combines economic, environmental and social impacts by reducing the transaction, rationally using raw materials, water and energy, reducing waste and increasing rates of reuse and recycling of materials, and improve the relationship with the public.

With initiatives such as signs with LED bulbs, more economical and durable walls with styrofoam blocks on the facade, use of solar energy, uniforms made from recycled PET bottles, posters from recycled material and ink without solvent, among others, Wal-Mart Camp is evidence that the sustainability can be replicated. Much of the stock is present in other units of the network and should be used in construction going forward. "All Wal-Mart Brazil will be ecofriendly, at different levels, according to the geographical and physical possibilities of each unit, complete Núñez. "Some of them are not visible to the customer, but have large environmental footprint."

Why Camp?

The choice of the neighborhood was not by chance. Camp store opening in the eco-efficient is to ratify the appointment of Wal-Mart to improve the quality of life in communities where it operates. The unit generated more than 350 direct jobs, mostly for people who live in the neighborhood. Moreover, the region will benefit from the actions of corporate social responsibility.
