Completed in 1876, the well was 45 feet in diameter and 40 feet deep in the form of a medieval-style building served as Garden City's only water source for 20 years. It was designed by Henry Lewis and James L’Hommedieu. Boilers produced steam heat and pumps filled seven miles of mains. It was used as a storage reservoir until it was filled in 1956.
