Laid down in 1986 and commissioned into US Military Sealift Command service in March 1989 as the USNS Maury (T-AGS-39), this ship served as a Hydrographic Survey Ship for five years before being placed out of service and into Reserve.
Stricken from the Naval Register in October 1994, the ship was transferred to the California Maritime Academy and entered service as the Training Ship Golden Bear III in May 1996.
