Hereford - pronounced 'He-ruh-fuud' not 'Heer-fuud' - is a cathedral city located in the West Midlands of England and has been known to be a city since antiquity. It is the county town of Herefordshire, which is now only an historic and ceremonial county and which, since its separation from the former recent 'super-county' of "Hereford & Worcester", now enjoys the status of a unitary local authority District instead. It is located near the Welsh borders and is known in Welsh as Henffordd.

  • Home of the Hereford Mappa Mundi... The Hereford Mappa Mundi is unique in Britain's heritage; an outstanding treasure of the medieval world, it records how thirteenth-century scholars interpreted the world in spiritual as well as geographical terms. The map bears the name of its author 'Richard of Haldingham or Lafford' (Holdingham and Sleaford in Lincolnshire). Recent research suggests a date of about 1300 for the creation of the map. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mappa_mundi http://www.herefordcathedral.org/mappa_mappa.asp
  • Locals are more likely to pronounce "yurfuud"
  • No it Herry-furd - that how the locals say it.
  • No it's definitely pronounced Heh-ruh-fuhd now, or you just drop the first H if you're a local. I think some of the older generation pronounce it Herry-fuhd but no one else does anymore.
