Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, once the nation's oldest Catholic college for women (co-educational as of 2015), is a 67-acre wooded campus located five miles northwest of Terre Haute, Indiana. The peaceful and beautiful campus features a fitness trail, lake, and stables amid the stately academic buildings. Founded in 1840 by the Sisters of Providence, the College boasts an enrollment of approximately 1,700 students in campus-based, undergraduate distance-learning, and graduate programs. Besides the College, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods is common ground for the Sisters of Providence, Woods Day Care/Pre-School, Providence Center and the White Violet Center for Eco-Justice.

It was founded as an academy for young women in 1841 by a French nun, Saint Theodore Guerin, canonized on October 15, 2006 by Pope Benedict XVI as Indiana's first saint, who located at the site in October 1840.
