Tanneries and homes of tanners were found in this district in the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as shoe factories up until the mid 20th century. Many of those buildings have been turned into condominiums, lofts and studios for artists, while others are occupied by art centers, bistros, restaurants, and cafés where music shows and cultural events are held.
