The approximate positions of the French and French allies (militia and Amerindians, shown by the thin lines to left and right of centre)at the start of the Battle of the Plains of Abraham. The French centre advanced to within forty metres of the British lines before the latter fired a volley, effectively ending the battle within a few minutes.
