The historic Maggie Lena Walker High School, once attended by tennis pro Arthur Ashe, was renovated in 2001 to house the former Governor's School for Government and International Studies (GSGIS), now called MLWGSGIS. The Art Deco-style building dates to 1938 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
