Small historically African-American college founded in 1888. After years of financial difficulties, the college closed its doors at the end of the 2012-2013 school year after a failed attempt at a merger with Saint Augustine's University, another primarily black college located in North Carolina. As of June 2014, the school is in national headlines as a proposed location at which to house some of the thousands of unaccompanied immigrant children that have poured across the border in early summer 2014. The plan is on hold following intense local backlash.

Architecturally, the historic college displays a number of styles and the oldest parts of campus are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
