Built in 1909 for the City of Seattle by the Richmond Beach Shipbuilding Co., the fireboat Duwamish served the Seattle Fire Department for over 75 years before retiring in 1985.

Originally steam powered and equipped with a subsurface bow ram to intentionally sink wooden ships common to the port at the time of her commissioning, the Duwamish was overhauled and upgraded several times during its career to its present configuration. Now under the ownership of the Puget Sound Fireboat Foundation, the Duwamish is maintained in a non-operational state at the Northwest Seaport historic ships dock.

Declared a National Historic Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places shortly after her decommissioning, the Duwamish is presently the second-oldest fireboat in the United States, behind only the 1900-built and still operational Edward M. Cotter of Buffalo, New York.
