Senate Square (Moscow)

Russia / Moscow / Moscow / Kreml
 square, invisible, historic town square

the area enclosed between the buildings of the Arsenal and the Senatorial Palace, from which got its name. The area resembles an elongated triangle with the sides in the form mentioned buildings. Previously, there was a "third building", the Armory Chamber which was demolished in 1959 and a new building for the same purpose was built elsewhere on the grounds.

Between 1730-36 in this area was built the palace of Anna Ivanovna - a small building in the Baroque style, the first work of FB Rastrelli as an architect. Built next to Arsenal, it was built as a temporary wooden residence. At that time the Kremlin was pretty derelict and the tsarina stayed at the Annengofsky Palace in Lefortovo instead of in the Kremlin. When she moved here it was the center of the administration of Russia until the return functions of the capital to St. Petersburg in 1733.

In the early 1930's on the square was divided into its current shape. Currently, there are voices (eg, R. Rakhmatullina) for the return of this area of the former type, ie for having to remove the trees from Senate Square.
