The Freedom Monument (Brīvības Piemineklis) is a symbol of Latvian unity and sovereignty. It was intended as a memorial to honor soldiers killed in action during the Latvian War of Independence. Unveiled in 1935, the 42-meter-high monument of granite, travertine and copper often serves as the focal point of public gatherings and official ceremonies.

  • Historically, this place at Alexander-III boulevard was built for the monument of Russian Czar Peter I. The monument was corrupted during the WWI, and separatist government of newly-formed country - Latvia - occupied this place by the Freedom Monument till now.
