Laulurinne is a big anfitheatre and a park for greater outdoor festivals. (Laulurinne = Song slope) It was build for outdoor event's purposes.
Ilosaarirock open air music festival held in Laulurinne in middle weekend of July was originally held in Ilosaari (from 1971) before it grew too big for a small island to handle (the island pulls ca. 5 000 people) and it was moved to a bigger area in Laulurinne. Today Ilosaarirock is one of the biggest festivals in Finland having 20 000 visitors and it has been sold out at least past 10 years. There performs ca. 60 band in 2 days and has many side-kick events so its total lenght grows to a week plus Kohti Rokkia -events (Towards Rock) in spring.
Ilosaarirock has been said to have a great athmosphere and the band are secondary in reasons why people come every year from all over Finland and beyond to experience the great fun of Ilosaarirock. It's not just a music festival, its a bigger wholeness with all of the clubs for different music genres, skating event, football match with rock-people and Pop-katu (Pop-street) which is organized in Joensuu center's walk street with variable events for the whole Ilosaarirock weekend, and many many more...
In sring one day before schools end, pupils from 1. to 6. grade from nearby communities come to the anfitheathre to perform with Karjalan sotilassoittokunta (Karelia military music department?) an hour long singing & music concert.
