In this village (Jhowdanga) late GOUR MOHAN BHATTACHARJEE, M.A. (Botany) was born.In his time there was no Science stream in Calcutta University. No M.Sc. diploma was awarded. He got the post of Deputy Magistrate offered by the then Governor of Bengal in 1894 (disputed) but he did not accept it. He preferred a job in education line. In British regime the then practice was English people used to hold the highest ost of Government institutions. Accordingly his prayer was turned down. Ultimately, after one year he was given a job as Headmaster, Goalpara (Now in Assam) Zella High School. After serving for a few years he felt an urge to open a English High school near his village. He with the help of local people and his own resources established a school at PATULI where no higher education facilities were available. He selected Patuli as the place was connected with railhead and it was a populated village. Ultimately he established a High School. He became the Founder Headmaster of the school which is now known as Patuli Higher Secondary School.
