Nieuwkerke (also known as Neuve-Eglise) was taken by the Germans in April 1918, before being finally retaken on September 2nd 1918 by the 36th (Ulster) Division. The church, which was destroyed during the war, has now been rebuilt. The Churchyard was used by Field Ambulances and fighting units throughout the war.
