Its current occupant is the Peter the Great Military Academy of Strategic Missile Forces, formerly the Feliks Dzerzhinsky Military Academy. Unlike Western Military Academies, this school does not have an undergraduate program. It is a post-graduate professional school for experienced commissioned officers and its graduates receive the equivalent of a Masters or Doctoral degree. The Academy was renamed for Peter the Great in 1997.

The three buildings are all four stories high and were designed by Karl Blank (1728-1793) in 1764. The style is neoclassical. The central administrative building was finished in 1781; the west quadrangle in the 1820s, under the supervision of Giovanni Gilardi (1757-1819) and then later his son, Domenico (1788-1845) and the final two upper levels of the east quadrangle in the 1940s.

The buildings were conceived as the Moscow Foundling Home, a project proposed to Catherine the Great by Ivan Betskoi, illegitimate son of Prince Ivan Trubetskoi.
