Orthodox Synagogue (Makó)

Hungary / Csongrad / Maky / Makó / Vorhand Mózes rabbi tér
 synagogue, judaism

The Orthodox Jews of Makó established their independent community in 1872 and built their synagogue in 1895. The Romantic tiered facade has rich ornamentations.

The particularity of this synagogue is the two-level female gallery separated by a wooden grid from the male oratory. In the oratory's centre is the raised Torah reading platform surrounded by a wrought-iron grid. The Torah pedestal with the ark joins the synagogue's east wall. The wall painting above it depicts the lions of Judah keeping the tablets with the Ten Commandments. The ceiling decorated with gilt stars imitates heaven.

This heritage building was restored in 2000. A memorial park has been established in the courtyard, where there is a memorial tablet of the martyrs.

Can be visited upon prior arrangement.
