Blahbaz (Kharkiv)

Ukraine / Kharkivska / Kharkiv
 invisible, residential area, historic district

The name of this historical district is short variant of Blahovіshchenskyi Bazaar ('Annunciation Bazaar'), also called Central Market now.

Until the beginning of the 19th century, this area was a vast island formed by two branches of the Lopan river.
Later, this territory became a swampy peninsula, and was named Dudinska Levada (after the name of the owner of the land) or Piskunivska Levada.
When the land passed into the possession of the city, the swamps were drained, and the bazaar was moved to this place from its old location near the Blahovishchenskyi ('Annunciation') Cathedral.
