Viterbo has been a spa town for centuries, and the Terme dei Papi continues the tradition. This spa offers the usual rundown of health and beauty treatments with an Etruscan twist: try a facial with local volcanic mud, or a steam bath in an ancient cave, where hot mineral water direct from the Bullicam spring splashes down a waterfall to a pool under your feet. The Terme dei Papi's main draw, however, is the terme (baths) themselves: a 100,000-square-foot outdoor limestone pool of Viterbo's famous hot water, which pours in on the shallow end (which is much hotter) at 59°C (138°F) and intoxicates with its sulfurous odor. Floats and deck chairs are for rent, but bring your own bathrobe and towel unless you're staying at the hotel. Strada Bagni 12, Viterbo, Italy. PHONE: 0761/3501. www.termedeipapi.it. COST: EUR15. OPEN: Pool daily 9-5:30, spa daily 9-6.
