  • Brief History: The place 'Nagaon' is a subdivision and district headquarters today with the same name district stands. The name Nagaon is derived from 'newly settled village.' The Ahom king Pratapsimha @ Siuchengpha @ Burha Raja A.D. 1603-41 ordered his Revenue and Administrative Chief Momai Tamuli Barbarua to give new settlements on the bank of river Kalong i.e. at Khagarijan, which is old name of Nagaon. The newly settled village is known as Nagaon i.e., newly settled village. The people were drawn from various parts of the State and from different clans. So they were known as Bebejia means variety or mixed. Tai-Ahom name is Ban-ok means new village. The district Nagaon was a part of old Kadali, Kopili, Dabaka, Kingdom of Hamsadhvaja, Dimalang, Swarnapitha etc. Nagaon was under the Varmana, Kachari, Ahom, Koch rulers. This was one of the first British districts of Assam.
  • The Tai-Ahom name is wrongly placed it should be actually -'Ban-On Mau,' i.e. newly settled village. Some of the ancient rulers of Nagaon region were: Hamsadhvaj, Vasundaravarman, Mahmanikya, Viswasundaravarmana, etc. During last days of the A:homs, Nagaon was known for _Bhotai Deka and Sindhura Hazarika, who were rebels against the A:hom Royal Court.
