This railway station connects Windsor to Slough, from which trains can be taken towards London, Reading, Oxford and a number of other connecting statons.
The branch was built for Queen Victoria's convenience travelling between Windsor Castle and London. At the time, the Great Western Railway contested with the London and South Western Railway to see who could have the honour of transporting Queen Victoria. In the end, the GWR won despite resistance from Eton College, hence the sign "Windsor Royal Station" on the entrance. The L&SWR built the line which runs from Windsor and Eton Riverside station to Staines and London Waterloo.
The station at one point had 4 platforms with direct services to Paddington and Basingstoke and often many other places, including onto the Metropolitan Railway. During the 1960s, this was cut back to the current shuttle service, so all but Platform 1 was taken out of use, and the surviving platform was shortened. The rest of the station has since been converted into a shopping centre and its Victorian structures thus survive.
Today, First Great Western provides a half-hourly shuttle which runs to Platform 1 at Slough using a diesel train with two or three carriages. Trains run every 20 minutes at peak time.
