People's Park (Berkeley, California) | landmark

USA / California / Berkeley / Berkeley, California / Haste Street, 1556
 park, landmark

People's Park was founded by Berkeley residents April 20, 1969 in the face of University expansion into the neighborhood. It survived despite repeated attempts by the university and law enforcement to shut it down or gentrify it. This park holds free speech/concert events on some Saturdays and sports a basketball court.

At all times, there are typically several dozen homeless people sleeping in the park, most keeping to themselves but some aggressively preaching this or that or begging.

Here, I slept, hid, was tear gassed, planted vegetables, and saw he first scuffle between Berkeley cops and locals, which led to the charge of the Alameda task force, which in turn led to the occupation by national guardsmen.

Beautiful park. leave it alone! Put a guard in there maybe at night to protect women. Nice place to get out of the ratrace carnival down on Telegraph.

Spent time here in early 70's playing guitar, smoking dope, and living the free life style.

This is where the annual Nude and Breast Freedom Parade starts, usually on a Sunday in the middle of September. For more info, visit http://www.xplicitplayers.com/

Beautiful park but needs a guard 24 hrs a day, too much violence. I lived there for a few years in 80s and 90s made a lot of friends there.
