Bete Medhane Alem, meaning the "House of the Savior or Redeemer of the World" is one of the eleven rock-cut churches of Lalibela. Established during the reign of Emperor Lalibela (1181-1221), it is the largest of all the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela. The structure is supported by 32 external columns and 28 from inside of the building.
