Laacher See

Germany / Rheinland-Pfalz / Wassenach /
 lake, volcano

It is a lake formed in a caldera in the Volcanic Eifel region. It has an oval shape and, at approximately 3.31 km², is the largest lake in Rhineland-Palatinate. The lake is fed primarily by cold, bitter-tasting groundwater and has no natural outflow. The average elevation (mean sea level) is usually 275 m, but can vary greatly depending on evaporation or precipitation, reaching up to 15 m. The rocks around the lake are the best place to collect the rate and lovely mineral Hauyne.
