The Fort of São Julião da Barra (Oeiras)

Portugal / Lisboa e Vale do Tejo / Carcavelos / Oeiras / Estrada Marginal
 castle, fortification, star fort

The Fort of São Julião da Barra was built shortly after 1580, by Italian architects Leonardo Turriano (for some) and Giacomo Palearo (for others), who have lived in Portugal in the 16th century.
The fort was part of the maritime defence line built along the Lisbon coast to protect the entrance to the River Tagus. The star shaped fort is the largest and most complex example of a Vauban fort still intact in Portugal; it has been modified and enlarged over the ages. During the 18th and 19th centuries it was used as a political prison, where a succession of Jesuits, Liberals and Absolutists were incarcerated.
