A public garden, maintained by the HCC dating initially from 1960 but embellished extensively since the 1980s. This is riverside park; it includes open parkland, woodlands, an enclosed set of period gardens and a working Cemetery.
The focus of Hamilton Gardens is on garden design, rather than on botanical science. The collection of period gardens includes a representative example of most garden designs, including English, Italian, Mughal, Chinese, Japanese and 20th century Modern. There is also a recreation of a pre-European Maori Garden.
Hamilton Gardens is used as the location of over 2,000 events each year, most significantly the Hamilton Gardens Arts Festival and the Pacific Rose Bowl Festival, both annual events. Annually the gardens attract more than 1 million people.
