Benneydale | village

The village was established in 1940's for housing miners and families related to the new state-owned underground coal mine which opened at that time further up the valley. In the 1960's an extensive mine fire closed-down the opertation. Twenty or so years later private miners were licensed to re-open the mine on a much smaller scale.

  • that is where I was born grew up as a child my dad worked in the mine and we moved to huntly when the mine closed then dad got a job in the mines and a state house in huntly when the town was thriving it was like the programme neighbours everyone helped everyone we all knew each other and it was a good place to grow up im sure all those who were there at the time will agree BENNEYDALE IS HOME
  • This is really a "ghost town" today, with just a few folk hanging on. I note a house sold for $30,000 recently. Less than 5% the cost of a house in Auckland!
