blockhouse (fort), historic landmark
Newly restored Mansfield Blockhouse in South Park. The 1812 blockhouse was built where Central Park stands on the square in downtown Mansfield. It was moved a century ago to South Park. Restoration began in 2007. The building has been wired with electricity and heating. Rudy Christian, of Burbank, Ohio, was hired for the reconstruction project.
An open house was held on November 22, 2009 to show off the newly restored Mansfield Blockhouse in South Park.
Sunda Peters, past president of the Richland County Genealogy Society, said stairs from a house built in the 1930s eventually will be installed inside the blockhouse, but for now officials are using a ladder to reach the upper floor.
Workers dismantled the nearly 200-year-old building, marking and numbering its pieces, then moved it about 200 feet east. The new site, on a grassy rise closer to Brinkerhoff Avenue, is more visible.
The blockhouse is a link to the city's pioneer history. It was one of the focal points of Mansfield's bicentennial celebration in 2008.
Early settlers used the blockhouse as a fortress against Indian attacks and as a courthouse and jail. Boy Scouts used the blockhouse as a meeting place from 1939 to 1989.
